Blackhawk Woodcarver
Volume XIX, Issue 4, April 2012

The President’s Corner

Happy April to all of you Woodcarvers.

The spring is here a month early.  Soon we will be carving outside.

Thanks to Roger for the wonderful class in relief carving.  Just walking around one could see how far everyone came.

I was at the Midway Village Museum Center and stumbled across Bob Matthews painted relief carving of the mill building.  Next time you go there, stop and see it.  It is a piece of art!

So keep those wood chips flying!

Steve

Show and Tell

For Show and Tell,

Bunny Nordheim suggested that it would be appreciated if the show and tell items were held up as the carver told about their carving. President Steve Terrill and Vice-President Bob Coleman obliged and held up each item as requested.

Club Photographer, Larry Clark, carved several small trees out of scrap basswood, because he was finding it difficult to carve a pine tree that was to his liking. He tried a new method of Ivan Whitlock’s that he found easy to draw and carve. He stated it was similar to Roger Benedict’s style but also different. Larry will now use this carving as a sample for future pine trees.

Frank Lay shallow relief of two flowers carved in walnut were formed from the knots in the wood with the other as filler. He finished the piece with polyurethane. The second shallow relief had a split in the center that to Frank looked like the side of a tree; so he started the piece by carving the tree using the split as a guide. The next step was to create a road to a covered bridge and then for balance a house on the left side of the carving. The walnut stain on the piece was his own concoction. To a five gallon pail add walnuts and water; the more walnuts the darker the stain. Let water and walnuts sit a month. When they are rank, discard walnuts and use the remaining water for a penetrating walnut stain. The final item was a cotton wood bark house with frond flourishes with a shoe polish finish.

Vice President, Bob Coleman, used standard rolling pins to create his wood spirits. He paid particular attention to the beard and mustache using an intertwining method for a unique result. The finish is polyurethane.

Art Sinden carved an Indian head and a Santa head...

Marshall Field, Jr. carved more of the interlocking hearts, crown of thorns, and other hand sized pins of hardwood.  He takes them to the Field family reunion and gives them to the ladies.

Art Brown created a shallow relief wooden apple imbedded in cork, The Laura Irish book, Relief for Beginners - simple projects, was his instruction manual. Diluted acrylic paint added color and the finish was 1/2 linseed oil, 1/2 mineral spirits with a touch of stain.
