Presidents Report July
2020
This month we celebrate the 4th
of July, also referred to as “Independence Day”. On July 4th in
1776 representatives of the 13 “English or British” Colonies in North
America signed a Declaration of Independence from British rule and King
George III. Of course, this lead to a bit of fireworks! A few years of it.
Then
came Uncle Sam as a symbol of the United States (of America). How he comes
about is a legend; or some various numbers of legends. He typically has a
white beard and is dressed in the colors of our flag. We all recognize him!
I have seen a number of very nice
carvings of him; but certainly not as many as Santa Claus!
In this case, member, Denny Neubauer
was kind enough to supply me with this picture of one of the carvings from
his collection. This one was carved by Mike Shipley.
I hope you enjoy the picture of this
carving and the others in this newsletter from our members.
Our membership chair Chuck Drewes
has updated the membership roster to show your 2020 membership now is good
through 2021. He has circulated it.
The COVID-19 virus is still a potent
threat and we are still generally in isolation. We probably will not be able
to return to Peterson Meadows until a proven vaccine is available. We will
keep you posted. Remember to stay safe and follow the guidelines.

At our monthly meetings members are
encouraged to bring in SHOW and TELL items along with carvings that are
tucked away from the past. Even though you might be tired
of looking at them, they may be teaching tools for others. Dust them off,
bring them in!

This is a vulture, the first wood burning I’ve done since
we stopped meeting. Mostly I’ve been painting, but I enjoyed working
on the vulture so I’ll probably get back to wood burning soon. I do
have a couple subjects in mind. I’ve done a couple more
burnings recently. I’m in my ugly bird phase, I guess. Here are
heads of a turkey, a vulture and a dodo bird.
Above is a picture of my forest city
little people. Denny Neubauer
This is my attempt at carving little
people with help and guidance from Denny Neubauer. Below
is a carving of a fish from birch bark that I did quite a while ago.

The North house needed a couple more
moose that I started a while ago and finally finished.
