The Blackhawk Woodcarver
Volume XXVI, Issue 6
Presidents Report June
2021
Summer has arrived! Temp hit 90F
today. We plan to hold our annual picnic this coming Wednesday, 9 May 2021,
in the late morning at Sinnissippi Park. It will be preceded by a Show &
Tell. We plan to use the location were we have been holding our weekly
“Carving in the Park”; and during the same time slot. We do not have the
park shelter reserved.
The picnic is for all members and
their spouse or other family or friend guest. The picnic is meant to be a
“bring all your own” food, drink, and service. A plastic table cloth is
probably a good idea. It is not meant to be a shared potluck affair due to
concerns over the virus transmission. However, there is no rule that you can
not bring food to offer to share; just do not count on it. So here is the
plan.
We will hold our annual picnic late
morning through noon of Wednesday, 9 May 2021, in Rockford’s Sinnissippi
Park in shelter 1 or 2 or in the nearby area. There are plenty of picnic
tables. This is across (the “one way” road through the park) from the golf
course headquarters. There is plenty of parking and restrooms in the
shelters. Watch for my little black Miata, Tony DeVita’s shiny black 1979
Chevy pickup, or Denny Neubauer’s little white Ford Transit van; then look
for us. We might be at the rear of the Twin Shelters (1 & 2). We will start
to arrive at 10:00 am to stake out space and set up for our group. Other
groups have the shelter or shelters reserved that whole day but will usually
do not arrive until afternoon. We just have to be flexible.
I would like to plan to start the
Show & Tell at 10:45 am; and assume it will take less than 30 minutes. Then
we can proceed to our picnic lunches. Tony DeVita will bring charcoal and
start a grill in case attendees wish to grill. Remember, the club is not
bringing drinks and we not requiring attendees to bring food to share. I
think we will be finishing our lunches around noon. I am hoping and
expecting that we will not have any conflicts with the groups who have
reserved the shelters.
Club charter member and long time
picnic chairman Tony DeVita encourages members to also consider bringing one
of their earliest carvings. He plans to do so. But, there is not any
specific theme of the Show & Tell. Just bring a carving or two that you wish
to show and share your story with us.
I would suggest arriving between
10:30 and 10:45 am so that you can participate and enjoy in our Show & Tell,
our picnic lunches, and socialization.

Del Lohr of Cedar Ridge Hardwoods
called me to ask if we would let the club members know that he has a large
inventory of carving woods, including basswood, butternut (both clear and
wormy), catalpa, pine, cherry, etc. He can provide all widths,
thicknesses and lengths. Del used to sell his wood at our annual
shows. His phone number is 815-938-2263.
