The Blackhawk Woodcarvers was founded in 1993 to bring local and area carvers together.
They formed a group that could trade tips, share their experiences, and just whittle and talk
Today, the Blackhawk Woodcarvers have a membership of over 100 men and women whose
skills cover the entire spectrum of the craft, from chip, characters, abstract and relief
carving. The club is open to all carvers, at all skill levels, including those with no carving
experience at all. Equipment can be as simple as a pocketknife to the more sophisticated
The goal of the Blackhawk Woodcarvers is to preserve and encourage continued growth
in the art and craft of carving. Club activities include seminars, workshops and "hands-
on" carving every Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. until 11:00. A business meeting
followed by demonstrations and "Show and Tell" is held on the third Wednesday of the month.
In August a professionally juried show is held where members' work is exhibited and some
offered for sale. Vendors of tools, cutouts and wood used in carving will be present.
The clubs resources include:
• A small how-to video library and books covering many carving styles and carving projects.
• Club discounts with some vendors.
• Classes and demonstrations by carvers in the Midwest area (including our own members)
on the various techniques in the world of carving.
• A grinder/polisher for your use.
Blackhawk Woodcarvers support various programs by giving demonstrations to area
organizations. All meetings are held at Ken-Rock Community Center / Sacred Heart Academy
at 3218 11th Street,Rockford, IL 61109. The meetings are held in the multi-purpose room.
