The Blackhawk Woodcarver

Volume XXII, Issue 1,  January 2015

Presidents Corner
Friends,
What could be better than having a place to go and meet with some friends, work on your hobby and have a good time. Of course you know this happens every Wednesday morning with the Blackhawk Carving Club.
2015 is going to be another good year for the Club. The monthly programs will be entertaining and educational, as will the classes and workshops that are occasionally held on Wednesday mornings.
The August Club Show will be a great time to see some wonderful carvings, show off your own if you want, present the club to the community and just have a good time as woodcarvers do.
This is a great club! Looking forward to the new year.
Gary Curl

A blonde is eating out at a very fancy restaurant with her family. Right then she sees an ice carving of a dolphin by the wall. She says to the waiter, "I love that ice carving, but what do you do with it when it melts?"

Christmas Party
If you missed the Christmas party you missed a good time of good friends, good food, and good fellowship. True, we get the same things every Wednes-day, but the Christmas party adds a little zip and zing, and we get to meet and mingle with our friends' other halves. You can't beat that with a stick!
I am always impressed by the men in our group who cook and bake, and todays spread represented more than a few of them. We had everything from pies to quiche all done by the guys, plus the goodies supplied by all the ladies, carvers and spouses alike. People ate till they popped, and then some. It was all really delicious, there were even a few healthy things to choose from, and how did they make that rainbow bread?
Roger made some presentations to some very deserving carvers and acknowledged the hard work by just about everyone in the club. If you weren't standing at some point to be acknowledged and honored it wasn't because you don’t do anything for the club. I have never before been a part of a group of people who are so willing to share and help you learn. You have each touched my life, and most likely the lives of many others in untold ways. I am proud to be a member of such a group.
Show and tell was more just 'show', but there were some really nice pieces on display for our spouses to see just what we're up to. The 'tell' part had to make way for the entertainment, a choral group from the school who entertained us with Christmas selections. They brought the true meaning of the season into the room with them.
A special thanks to Rosalie and her elves for the hard work that was done to put this all together. She did a splendid job, and I think we should all show our ap-preciation by voting her in as the lifetime chair for the Christmas party, all in favor, say 'I'.
May Christmas be forever in your heart. Bunny Nordheim

Time to Pay your Dues ($25) for 2015! See Chuck Drewes our Membership and Directory Coordinator
(he will gladly take your money and maybe even write you a receipt.)

Our president asked that I find and publish this recipe: Pomegranate, Kale, and Wild Rice Salad with Walnuts and Feta— submitted by Bunnie Nordheim
1 Cup pomegranate seeds
2 Cups chopped baby kale 2 Cups cooked wild rice ¼ Cup toasted walnuts ¼ Cup Feta cheese
Dressing:
½ Cup minced green onions
2 Tablespoons olive oil
2 Tablespoons water
2 Tablespoons honey
¼ teaspoon apple cider vinegar
½ teaspoon salt
1 squeeze lemon or orange juice Prep the salad ingredients (chop, rinse, toast, etc.) Chill while making the dressing Mince the green onions in food processor. Add the other dressing ingredients and blend well. Toss the salad ingredients together, add the dressing and toss again.
(Note: I usually double the dressing recipe for this. Taste the dressing and adjust as you go. I especially like adding more apple cider vinegar. Enjoy!)
