In Memorium
Long time woodcarver Tony Valdez died on June 15, 2013, He was 92. He had a degree in engineering and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army. He owned a Jewelry business, worked as an Engineer , then worked for Ingersoll as a machinist and Draftsman. He later became a rocket designer for Aerojet Corp. Later he worked for Brunswick Corp. of Chicago where he was a Plant Engineering Manager, retiring in 1985. Besides Woodcarving, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, pilot, flight instructor, and motorcycle racer.
We wish condolences to his widow Annette, daughter Gelana, grand daughter, Gana, three great grandchildren, and six step-children.
We will miss Tony. He joined Blackhawk Woodcarvers in 2000. He preferred carving figures, He carved a 24” statue of Moses carrying the Ten Commandments which he donated to his church. We remember in 2010 when he announced that he flew a plane on his 90th birthday in August. RIP Tony.

Minutes (in brief)

The Black hawk Woodcarver’s meeting for June 19th
At 9am sharp Pres. Bob Coleman opened the monthly meeting of the Black hawk woodcarver’s.
Sec. Arne M. Larsen read the meeting’s minute’s for May 15th.
At 9:17am. John Skaggs read the treasure’s report.
Bob Coleman reported the death of Tony Valdez and a collection jar was put out for the family. After the collection was taken we had donated $27.00 for his memorial and a card.
Pres. Bob Coleman explained the by law’s that had been written up and had made up copies for us. Thanks to the nice person that did this for us all.
Bob shared mail from the North Suburban Carver’s Club advertising their show in October. He also had a note from Bob Matthews who is trying to get better. He wanted to remind us about the carving class with Denny Neubauer on July 3.  Bob also said that there was an upcoming lecturer Susan Alexander who writes for Carving Magazine. Who is coming to our meeting on July 24th to talk about Carving and publishing Carving Tips.
Our President Bob Coleman talked about Vice Pres. Bob Mathews recent heart problems and a card singed was sent to his house.
Tod Wisner discussed the nice time all that went to the Woodcarver’s International meeting had this last weekend. Much to my dismay, he said that several members were a part of the show and 3 had won ribbons. Tod said, Mary Wilder won a second place for her Bison Carving. Dave Meyer also won a ribbon for his relief carving. Thanks for representing our club
Larry Clark Our photographer said he has been working on our up and coming show posters and business cards and if there were other thing’s someone wanted to put in. Please contact him at 815 262 9982.
Bob Hallstrom spoke briefly about the Elgin Country Club Show coming up on July 19th and how they need woodcarver’s to assist in a soap carving exhibit. Also, the Midtown Show at 7th Street and 4th Avenue on July 13th.
Don Stansfield talked about the Michigan Woodcarver’s Association Michigan Festival of Gourds, September 13, 14, 15. Don encouraged people to turn in entries for the show two weeks early. He passed around a sign-up sheet for workers for the show. He asked people to not sign up for more than one activity at the same time slot. Bob Hallstrom made an appeal for donated carvings or other wood products for the raffle, our big moneymaker.
Also we all thank Jeffery Hartman one of our inlay carvers for all the nice sauces he has brought into our club. Jeff has done this several times so be sure to thank him.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary Arne M. Larsen.
