The President’s Corner

It has been a fun few months. The raptor group was a good way to see the birds and understand their needs. The picnic was fun from what I have heard, Thanks to the committee for all your hard work. We are looking forward to all the new classes coming up for the rest of the year. The carving class with Ray Olson started this week and the class is doing a fine job.
Bob Coleman

Update on Bob Matthews: As most of us know, Bob had a Stroke on Wed. May 29th. This on top of his multiple other medical concerns recently. He was close to home and driving when he had a minor accident going slowly. A neighbor helped him as he was confused and disoriented. He went to the hospital and was administered the drug TPA in a very timely fashion. He did respond rapidly to the drug. He has no damage to his motor skills. His speech and comprehension improve. He came home on Friday May 31.  He continues to recover at home and is better each day. He continues to be waiting for gallbladder surgery which got put on hold. Karen continues to take good care of him.
Bob writes “I asked Karen on how am I am doing and she said that I'm doing OK. I find that I don't have the energy I used to have.  I have done some driving around Belvidere by myself and/or I have Karen as my copilot. My car is still in the shop getting repaired and/or painted. Hope to get it back this week.  We talked to our Doctor last week and we talked about getting some speech therapy. I have some trouble with words and comprehension.  I'm still carving every day with new projects and also have completed several since the last business meeting.  I don't think I will make this week’s meeting.

Minutes (in brief)
Blackhawk Woodcarver's May 15, 2013
Bob Coleman opened the meeting at 9am.
Arne Larsen read last month's minutes.
John Skaggs gave the Treasurers Report. He also told the members he paid the club’s insurance. John also told us that he wasn't changing the bank we use because it somehow would change our non-for-profit status.  Mrs. Donna Wisner gave her petty cash report with corrections.  Mr. Charles Drewes talked briefly about the membership and stated that there are still some unpaid members that he is talking to. He also introduced our newest member; Russell Lundberg. We have had 5 or 6 new members this month.  Bob acknowledged Opal Field’s Letter thanking us for our sympathy in the recent loss of her husband Marshal Field.
New business:
Bob Coleman introduced several By Law revisions and asked for a vote of approval for the same. It was requested that we vote on each issue individually. The 1st change was that the Secretary is in charge of getting and sending cards for our sick and deceased members. This was voted on and  passed.  2nd Change was an increase on the Annual Show’s Judge's fee. Up to $400.00 Total with an annual review of the fee. This was passed with discussion.  3rd Change was to increase the Program committee budget up to a maximum of $600 per year to be reviewed annually. This was passed.  4th Change was that the original Memorial gift of $25.00 for the family of deceased members would be dropped and instead it was recommended that we pass a hat for donations. Voted on and approved.  Louie Cowan asked for donations from our club for MDA. We passed the hat.  Elaine Terrell is donating an old HP printer/copier to the club.  Gordy Moscinski motioned the sign in sheet be put up by the entrance door. This was voted on and passed. He would also like that we announce how many people attended the meeting. Larry Clark talked a little on the signup sheet historically when members were awarded points for attendance.  Don Stansfield talked on our carver's show and encouraged more participation would help our show a lot. He has a sign up sheet for working the show. He spoke about the 3/3 carving's etc.  Bob Hallstrom is in charge of club Logo Clothing and Apron requests.  Bernie Budzynski said that Cherry Valley Library would like to showcase some of our carving`s with a Christmas theme. They would also request that someone would do a Santa Claus with several steps in how it is done. Let Bob know if you have things to display.  Gordy Moscinski notes that we have archived minutes on the website.                      cube

Well my surgery is behind me so it’s back to business, or I thought so! By know must most of the members know I had a stroke on May 29th. I’m back home and the medication is working, so it will take several weeks before I get back to the club.
The current schedule.
I would like to thank the Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab and Education for the presentation on May 29th.
On June 5th Ray Olsen will teach you how to carve a caricature . I know a signup sheet has been passed around and I think there are some spots left.
On July 3rd and 10th Denny Neubauer will teach you how to carve a miniature. I’ll get a signup sheet going at the next business meeting. Should be fun and bring you’re glasses, etc.
On July 24th Susan Alexander will give us a presentation on carving and publishing carving tips. Suggest you might want to offer her with some tips of your own.
August 17th  Club Show. (see club show)
September 4th, discussions and demonstration on air brushing with Josh Guge.
Working on one more presentation, that should take place in October or November.
December, Christmas party.
